Customized Biological Products
Custom Biologicals has the technical ability and expertise to customize biological products for use in agriculture. Both bacterial and Trichoderma based products are available. Most of our existing products have been developed with ideas and insight from customer and distributors.
In fact, I get calls almost every week about customizing a product or knocking off
an existing product. So yes, we can customize a product; however, there are some important factors to consider before we begin the customization process. Additionally, there are several steps we need to take during the process.
Lets start with the questions to ask before we start thinking about customized biological product.
List of Factors to Consider Before Starting
First, is it legal. Custom Biologicals will not and cannot violate existing patent or registration laws.
Secondly, is the product scientifically viable? In other words, can the product be produced with existing technology or is it a science project?
Next, does the product make sense. Many combinations of beneficial microbials are available, but does your combination have a reason to exist? Or is it just being different, to be different. What special effect will this product bring to the marketplace. Would you be better off simply using one of our existing products?
Finally, is the product economically viable? This one is simple. Can everyone make money?
If the potential product is legal, if it can be produced with existing technology, and if it is economically viable, then we can proceed towards customization.
The first step is either a sample, for an existing product, or a conversation about the exact type of product to be created. Typically customers either tell me the desired effect, such as seed treatment, or they specify a particular microorganism(s) that they are interested in.
With a sample, we’ll analyze both the active ingredient and the inactive ingredients. With solids or powders, we’ll pay particular attention to the carrier used. This process usually takes 2-3 weeks.
Once we’ve analyzed the sample, we’re ready to put together a sample of our new product. New product costs are also discussed at this point at well as package size, containers, and labels.
Finally, a production batch size product is manufactured and distributed.
From the initial discussion, to the point of having a commercial size production run is usually 6-10 weeks.
I hope this post helps clarify our process for customized biological products.
