Glossary of Frequently Used Terms
Aerobic Bacteria – Bacteria that require oxygen to grow and multiply.
Anaerobic Bacteria – Bacteria that cannot survive in the presence of oxygen.
Biochar – The name for charcoal when used for a purpose such as a soil amendment. Biochar has unique physical properties that can improve soil function.
Biological Soil Amendment – Usually a beneficial fungi or beneficial bacteria that is added to the soil in order to improve the soil function.
Beneficial Bacteria – Bacteria are single celled, prokaryotic organisms. There are a number of bacteria that improve soils and help plants grow larger and healthier. Many of the beneficial bacteria are of the species Bacillus.
